Aging In Place Remodeling

Aging In Place:

Refers to living where you have lived for years, typically not in a health care environment, using products, services and connivances which allow you to remain in your home as circumstances change.

Universal Design:

Is a design approach that seeks to create home environments that can used by as many people as possible. For example, a Lever Handle Faucet that can be effectively used by children and elderly members of the home.  

The intent of universal Design is to simplify daily activities for family members of all ages and abilities.  An example application is to install doorways and walkways freely useable for small children, as well as, accommodating family members with walkers or wheelchairs.

Additional applications may include:

  • Adding additional lighting in hallways and stairs.
  • Putting Living Quarter’s (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry room) all on one main level.
  • Replacing knobs with levers on doors and faucets.
  • Adding handrails and grab bars.
  • Placing appliances, fixtures and cabinets within easy reach.
